OBJECTIVES

at the end of this training session, participants will know how to :

  • identify hazardous products in their workplace;
  • recognize prevention measures;
  • observe, read and understand pictograms, labels and posters;
  • find information on safety data sheets.

SESSION OUTLINE

Short description of “Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System” (WHMIS) and its purpose

Hazard pictograms : classification and risks

  • Main characteristics of each category and related risks

Consumer products : pictograms and guidelines

Safe use of hazardous materials

  • Principles relating to all hazardous materials : eliminate / reduce • control • protect oneself

  • Personal protection (basic rules)

Labels, posters and safety data sheets (SDS) : requirements and content

  • Labels, posters and safety data sheets understanding

  • Document retention and safety dialogues

  • How to react in an emergency situation

Various hand-on exercices and situation simulations will allow participants to better understand the information system and issues related to usage, handling and storage hazardous materials.
